Black & White Composition/Object Abstraction
Class
DS120
Date
October 2023
Topic: Yerba Mate
Purpose: This Assignment asked students to create a composition that showcases depth on a two-dimensional surface through black and white object abstraction.
Approach: Utilizing a crushed Yerba Mate can, I wanted to encapsulate the beverage's association with the environment as well as vitality and energy. To convey this, I combined organic and geometric shapes, infusing the composition with movement and energy. To enhance visual complexity and signify the depth within the can's interior, I concentrated the darkest tones at its center, utilizing stippling and alcohol-based markers for shading. To achieve further dimension, I incorporated topographical cutouts along the four edges, which also served to illuminate the lightest areas within the composition.
